Varsity Girls Basketball - March 31

Jaguars Overpower Eagles 43-16
The SCCLC Eagles could not keep up with the Cooperative Jaguars in their final regular season game played on Thursday at the Cooperative gym. The Jaguars got off to a tremendous start, building up a 22-3 lead by the middle of the second quarter. The Eagles struggled to move the ball up the court as the Jaguars pressured them for the entire game. The first half ended 22-5.
In the second half, the Jaguars continued to focus on pressuring the Eagles, which resulted in many steals for the Jaguars. The Eagles improved slightly, scoring points slowly but surely. The third quarter ended with a score of 35-12. In the fourth quarter, the Jaguars took advantage of poor passing by the Eagles, stealing many loose balls and scoring off of numerous breakaways. They continued their constant pressure of the Eagles, resulting in an even more lopsided match. The final score was 43-16, leaving the Jaguars unbeaten for the entire season.

Knights Edge Past Griffins 23-22
Story by Claudia Hennessey, CC

A close and sluggish game ended with the Cambridge Varsity girls victorious over the International Griffins on Thursday afternoon in Cambridge’s home gym. A tedious and fairly uneventful first quarter saw the girls from both teams showing little skills and using no apparent strategies. This was especially clear when both teams would crowd around the player with the ball instead of spreading around the court. After some impractical shooting attempts by the Griffins, the first quarter ended 6-1 for the Knights. This was followed by a bit more enlivened, but still similarly muddled, second quarter that ended 9-7 again with the Cambridge girls ahead.

By the second half, both teams were noticeably tired, and as they remained scrambled and out of order they seemed to lose even more concentration and focus. Although there were some fine plays, including Cambridge’s Nicole Fermin’s especially good performance as she administered a great shot that was result of a magnificent steal, both teams could not seem to work together by themselves. As the last three minutes dragged on the clock, anxiety arose in the crowd since the game was tied at 19-19. However, unfortunate failure for the Griffins at the free throw line made them miss their chance at leading the game and the Cambridge girls managed to stay ahead by one point. The game ended 23-22 with a win for the Cambridge Knights.
