Jaguars breeze by Knights, 25-8, 25-9
The Cooperative boys varsity volleyball team gave Cambridge one of the worst whippings in the history of the league as they triumphed 25-8, 25-9 in their home gym Friday.
Cambridge was missing several regulars and had to use player who had already endured a punishing junior varsity game. They trailed from the start, and got most of their points from Jaguar errors.
The Jaguars, for their part, played with exquisite precision, and looked ready to challenge the league leaders -- International and Christian Learning -- for the league championship.
For a while in the second game it seemed possible that Cooperative might "shut out" the Knights -- allow them no points at all. The Jaguars were ahead 10-0 before Cambridge scored, and subsequently held leads of 16-2 and 19-4.
Most of Cambridge's points came as the Jaguars tried to fine tune their spiking skills, and hit several balls long.
There was glory for all on the Jaguar side. Jorge Rojas, Juan Afredo Abuawad, Diego Morales, Wilson Salvatierra, and David Shin all played well.
Cambridge did not have a player on the court capable of getting far enough above the net to spike the ball downward. Matias Martinez, though lacking height, was impressive in that he never gave up and played the entire game with skill and intensity.
Alvaro Lopez was responsible for several of the Knights few moments of distinction.
