JV Girls Basketball

Lady Knights Start Off Season with a 13-11 Win Over Eagles
Story by Jesse Mann, SCCLC

The JV basketball season was kicked off today with a fierce match between the JV girl Eagles and the Cambridge Knights. Both teams stepped onto the court excited to play, which led to a very competitive contest. The game got off to a slow start with the first point finally coming from a Cambridge free throw. The Knights successfully defended their narrow lead for the remainder of the first half, with a couple baskets by each team leaving the score at 5 - 4 with the Knights ahead. The pace picked up significantly in the second half, while neither team allowed the other any advantage. The Eagles briefly enjoyed a small lead before an offensive burst by the Knights left the score at 13 - 10 with only a few minutes left in the game. The clock slowly wound down, and the Eagles only managed to get one free throw into the net before the final buzzer despite several close attempts. The Cambridge girls pulled off a close game, winning 13-11. Nicole Fermin, of Cambridge College, had an outstanding performance, scoring 11 of the 13 points scored by the Knights. One attentive Eagles fan described the match as "hard fought – but both teams were a bit raw."

Griffins Triumph over Jaguars 16-13
Story by Sung Eun Song, SCIS

The girls JV basketball team from International defeated the Cooperative Jaguars in a well fought game that took place in the International gymnasium on Tuesday. Both teams started out well in the first quarter, with neither team establishing a great advantage over the other. The first quarter ended with a score of 2-2. At the beginning of the second quarter, Griffins took a 5-2 lead through impressive teamwork. The Griffins were also helped by several sharp, accurate free throws. Also, accurate passes helped to open up scoring opportunities for the Griffins. The leading scorer of Cooperative was Geraldine Lopez. She seemed able to tear open any defensive formation attempted by Griffins. However, Griffins’ offensive pressure was relentless, and eventually, the second quarter ended with the Griffins leading 8-4.

International continuously took the lead in the third set as well. Jaguars continued to struggle and failed to come up with any way to suppress the Griffins’ strong attacks. The third quarter ended 13-8. In the fourth quarter, Jaguars began to catch up with the Griffins very fast. Their fierce attacks narrowed the Griffins' lead to 3 points with the score at 16-13. However, there were no more baskets and the game ended at 16-13, giving a victory to the Griffin girls.
