It was a warm, but not broiling, Thursday afternoon -- just right for a varsity girls basketball l game between two ancient rivals, Cooperative and Christian Learning. Both teams showed up really jazzed to play after a long Easter, and while both put plenty of energy and effort the game, the Jaguars had the power this time and won 53-29. It was a reasonably close match until the Eagles lost focus in the last quarter, but they never gave up.
The game began with both teams pumped up and a big crowd cheering for them. SCCS got a head start taking the score up to 9-5 in the first quarter. But still CLC was putting a lot effort. The girls form both teams tore up and down the court, fighting for each point.
The second quarter was much like the first in intensity with Eagle Rebekah Kienzle playing inspired defense, making it hard for the Jaguars to get around her and score.some points. This tall player was a great defense for their team. But overall, it was the Jaguar defense, working as a team, that was controlling the game. As a result the Jaguars continued to score two points for each one the Eagles scored, and led 25-11 at halftime..
Jaguar Senior Ana Paula Peredo showed off her skills in the third quarter dribbling the ball back and forth through the Eagles and scoring some amazing shots. Here is where the SCCS girls began to gain some advantage in the game, bringing up the score to 39-15.
Finally, in the last quarter, the Christian Learning girls were beat up and had a hard time getting past the amazing defense the SCCS girls had planned out. The final score was 53-29, but even though not really close, the effort and team work with which it was played made it a worthwhile, even inspiring, game for watching,
For the Jaguars, Carla Limpias had 14 points, Peredo and Giovanna Varalta 12, Giuliana Varalta 8, and Sofia Sotelo 7.
For the Eagles, Abby Phillips had 12, Rebekah Kienzle 11, Javiera Alipaz four, and Naomi Canaviri two.
