JV Girls Basketball - March 13

Eagles Win Easily Over Knights

By Adriana Guzman

The Eagles junior varsity girls basketball team had an amazing victory over the Knights, winning by 64 points, 66-2, in a game played at the Cambridge gym.
It was evident from early on that the Eagles had decided to win,  and that’s exactly what they did. It was a very impressive game to see because the Eagles were playing incredibly well, especially eighth grader Rebeca Escudero, who scored 34 points, almost half of the Eagle total.
Classmate Maria Anderson wasn’t far behind, tallying  20 points for the Eagles.
The Knights were  behind 12-0 at the end of the first quarter, and by the end of the second quarter it was really tough for the Knights because they were losing 26-0.
The third quarter was even harder for the Knights as the Eagles added another 20 points to their total. But at some point the Knights had to do something to avoid a shutout, and in the third quarter Ariana Vidal  managed to score the Knights only basket.  It was a very nice shot, and Knights were celebrating that at least they had scored a basket. But at  the end of the third quarter the Eagles were destroying Knights 46-2.
Just trying to defend the best they could, the Knights by the fourth quarter were just waiting for the game to end, which it finally did, but not before the Eagles scored another twenty points, making the final score 66-2.
The  game was very easy for the Eagles. It seemed like Knights weren’t any type of rivals for the aggressive Eagles, and were powerless to do anything to recover the points they were losing throughout the game.

Besides Escudero's and Andreson's points, the Eagles got six points fromShekinah Miranda, four from Emily Ordoñez, and two from Teresa Janzen.

For the resord, it was not the biggest blowout in League history. In 2008 the Cooperative junior varsity  -- the ones who are seniors now -- defeated International 74-6. That was actually the single game high point record for any team, boys or girls, varsity or junior varsity, until the Christian Learning boys tam scored 76 in a game last year. However, the 2007 Jaguar JV girls team still has the record for biggest winning margin.

Jaguars Squeeze Past Knights, 20-18

The Cooperative girls junior varsity basketball team held off a foiurth quarter surge by International to win the game by a single basket, 20-18, in a game played at Cooperative Tuesday.

The Griifins had been in control early in the game, and led 6-4 at the end of the first quarter- However, eight unanswered points reeled off by the Jaguars in the second quarter put them in the driver's seat at half time with a 12-6 lead.

The Jaguars widened their advantage slightly in the third quarter, and were leading 18-11 headed into the final stanza. But then the momentum swung back to the Griffins, who outscored the Jaguars 7-2 in the fourth quarter, but that lone fourth quarter basket by Analee Davis gave the Jaguars their two-point margin of victory.

Giuliana Varalta was the high scorer for the Jaguars with ten points; Andrea Chavez had six; while Davis and Isabela Peña and two points each.

For the Griffins Pamela Hernandez and Maria Zelada each had six points; Andi Ibañez had four; and Olivia Navarro and Camila Barrientos added a point each.
