Eagles Drive Jags into Overtime

By Javiera Alipaz

With a final score of 20- 18, the Learning Center’s JV boys finished off an adrenaline-filled game on their home court Tuesday. With the Jaguars making three points in the first five minutes, two  baskets by Eduardo Ustares and one by Luis Peredo, the eagles were down 6-0.  With two and a half minutes left on the clock, the Eagles soared their way almost into a tie at the end of the first quarter, which ended at 5-6. In the second quarter, the Eagles managed another basket. The Jaguars however, could only credit themselves for one more point , and the first half ended tied at 7-7.

Two and a half minutes into the third quarter, the score was still tied at 7-7. Eagle Luke Phillips then landed a basket, changing the score to 9-7. Micah Janzen, also an Eagle, took advantage of his two free throws moving the score up to 11-7.  Only 17 seconds later, Jaguar Rodrigo Chavez managed to make another free throw himself, settling the score at 11-8.

After only 30 seconds of play in the fourth quarter, Phillips stomped his way into the basket once again. Three Jaguar baskets followed, and by the middle of the quarter, the excitement and tension were thick in the air. With only 5 minutes left, a time out was called, raising the anticipation. When only a minute and half was left the score was tied at 16-16 due to another Jaguar basket by Chavez and three points by Phillips. Thirty seconds were left on the clock and Jaguar Raul Valle made a basket, bringing the score to 18-16, with the Jaguars on top. Just when the fans in the Eagles’ famous cheering section thought that the game was over, Phillips tied the score at 18-18 with a swish with only 16 seconds left on the clock.

Overtime started with Eagle Claudio Sandoval taking it in from the sidelines.  Eagle Regan Janzen was fouled 3 seconds into overtime. Janzen shot and landed the Eagles a free throw. With only one minute and fourteen seconds left, Phillips also managed to land a free throw for the Eagles, settling what would later be the final score of 20-18.

Little Knights hammer Griffin JV. 40-13

Paced by the double-digit point production of Massa Ueno and Santiago Hurtado, the Cambridge boys junior varsity retained its unbeaten status by defeating International 40-13 on the Knights  home court Tuesday.

The Knights spurted to an 8-0 lead at the start of the game. International got baskets from Jaime Barrenechea and Alfonso Justinano just before the quarter ended to make the score somewhat more respectable at 10-4.

The Knights basically put the game away in the second quarter in which they outscored the Griffins 13 to 1, and took a 23-5 halftime lead.

The rest of the game was sort of an afterthought, as both teams gave all their players plenty of opportunity to play. The scoring was slower, but Cambridge continued to tally two points for each point the Griffins scored. The tally was 29-8 for Cambridge at the end of the third quarter, and 40 to 13 at the game’s end.

For Cambridge, Hurtado tallied 18 points, and Ueno 15. Daniel Cortes scored four and Nando Boller three. Cambridge was playing without Percy Vidal who has been one of its top scorers. He was ill.

For International Jose Ojeda had eight, Jaime Barrenechea three and Alfonso Justiniano two.

Cambridge is now 3-0 at the season’s halfway mark. and has not been seriously challenged. With two of its remaining three games at home, the Knights would appear to have a clear path ahead to the JV championship.
