Late surge lifts Griffins over Knights

The International girls junior varsity broke open what had been a very close contest with a seven-point fourth quarter, and defeated Cambridge 15-10 Tuesday in the Cambridge gym.
The Griffins led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter, but at the half the score was knotted at 6-6. The two teams scored a basket each in the third quarter to leave the score tied at 8-8. Six of International's eight points had come on foul shots.
However, in the fourth quarter the Griffinettes outscored the little Lady Knights seven to two, making the final score 15-10.
For International, Pamela Suarez, Olivia Navarro, and Natalia Aguilera each had four points, Antonia Maggi had two, and Renata Maggi 1.
For Cambridge Amaya Yañez had four; Patricia Zhou Zeng, Kamila Morato, and Nicole Fermin had two points each.

Eagle JV overcomes Cooperative, 24-17

The Christian Learning girls junior varsity girls basketball team overcame an early deficit and defeated Cooperative decisively 24-17 on their home court Tuesday afternoon.
In what was an unusually high-scoring game for girls junior varsity, the winless Jaguarettes came back from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, and added another basket at the beginning of the second quarter to lead 7-4.
The Little Eagles stormed back at that point to take a 10-7 lead at halftime, and never trailed again -- though things got close.
In the third quarter Christian Learning stretched its lead to 14-7, at which point an Eagle player accidentally -- on a beautiful move -- put the ball in the wrong basket. Apparently buoyed by this piece of good fortune, Cooperative added another basket and trailed 15-11 at the end of the third quarter.
The Jaguars then got another basket in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, slicing the Eagle lead to only two points at 15-13.
But the Eagles took charge in the last five minutes, scoring four field goals and a foul shot, while the Jaguars could only make one basket in reply. The Eagles last basket was a buzzer-beater by Rebekah Kienzle. The final score was 24-17.
The Eagles had a balanced attack, getting baskets from six players. Rebekah Kienzle led the Eaglettes attack with nine Emily Ordoñez had six, Naomi Canaviri had three points, HaEun Lee and Emily Mercado two each. HaeRim Ryu had one point.
Cooperative's Jessica Maureira had eight points, Geraldine Millos five, and Marcella Netzlaff and Megumi Kamiya had two points each.
