Ready for a new season

Basketball, track schedules unveiled

The 2008 SCISL schedules for basketball and track have been announced, with opening day for varsity hoops competition slated for Wednesday, February 21. The junior varsity season will start two days earlier. (See schedules at right.)
Only Co-operative and International will play during the first week. Christian Learning and Cambridge, which start classes later, will begin play the week after. As of the present moment it is expected that all schools will field boys and girls basketball teams in both varsity and junior varsity competition. Any discrepancies in the proposed schedules should be brought to the attention of the coaches at each school.
A possibly interesting wrinkle in the schedule involves the fact that Cambridge and Christian Learning boys varsity teams, which have vied with each other for the championship in the last three seasons, will not meet until the second half of the season, and then will play both their games within a three-week period.
As in the past, each of the four school in the league will play home and away games against all of the other teams in the league. At the end of the season there will be playoffs. In the semifinals the first place team will play the fourth place team, and the second-place team will play the third-place team. The winners then meet in the finals to determine the league champion. A consolation game between the losers in the semi-finals will determine third place.
The junior varsity will have a single post-season championship game between the teams that finish first and second.
Two two-day track and field meets will be held, with the scores being added together to determine the team championships. The order of finish at the first meet will determine lane assignments at the second meet. Lane assignments for the first meet will be determined by lot. For individual athletes, the winner at the second meet will be regarded as the league champion and receive the appropriate medal. There will be separate events for both boys and girls, and separate team trophies. However, there is no junior varsity competition in track and field.
The first meet will be held Friday, Feb. 29 and Saturday, March 1. The second meet will be on Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29.
The Friday meets are for the running events 100-, 200-, 400-, 800- and 1500-meter races, plus relays -- and will both be held at Tahuichi Stadium starting at 3:30 p.m. The Saturday meets are for the field events -- long jump, high jump, shot put and discus -- and will begin at 10 a.m. The field events on March 1 will be at Co-operative, and the events on March 29 will be at International.

Student journalists sought at all schools
As was done during the soccer and volleyball seasons, coverage of the games and meets on SCISL News will be accomplished to the maximum extent possible by student journalists. When student journalists are not available coverage will be compiled from coaches' and referees' reports. If you would like to write reports, take pictures, or help administer SCISL News please send an e-mail to David Boldt, advisor to the project, at boldt27@gmail.com.
