Opening Day: International notches four wins

With blue skies overhead, pleasant temperatures, and light breezes, the weather was perfect for opening day of SCISL’s fourth season of soccer and volleyball action Thursday.
International School had the best record on the day, recording wins in all four categories: varsity boys soccer, junior varsity boys soccer, varsity girls volleyball, and junior varsity girls volleyball.

Varsity Boys Soccer
Co-operative jolts defending champion Cambridge, 2-0
Senior captain Pablo Taborga tallied two second half goals to propel the Co-operative Jaguars varsity boys soccer team to a 2-0 win over the Cambridge Knights before a small crowd on the Jaguars home field Thursday.
The first half was a scoreless duel, with both goalies getting numerous opportunities to handle the ball. Cambridge, coached by Erwin “Platini” Sanchez who is also coach of the Bolivian national team, actually had more shots on goal than Co-operative and appeared to have the better of things.
But the Jaguars, coached by Orlando Taja, maintained discipline, and cashed in on two occasions in the second half on which Taborga got loose in front of the Cambridge goal with the ball. Esteban Cronenbold earned an assist on the second goal with a precisely hit cross that Taborga took in stride.
The contest pitted Cambridge, last year’s league champion, against Co-operative, which had dominated the league the two previous years. Co-operative won last year’s opening game, but after that loss Cambridge went undefeated.

International taps in rebound to edge Eagles
Late in the second half the International School boys varsity soccer team tapped in at short range a shot the Christian Learning goalkeeper had just deflected to gain a 2-1 victory in a hard-fought contest at International Thursday.
The International Griffins had scored first, but the Christian Learning Eagles evened the score, setting the stage for the game-winning tap-in. Eduardo Bedoya scored both of International’s goals.
A large crowd was on hand for the game.

Junior Varsity Boys Soccer
Co-operative easily outpaces Cambridge, 5-1

The International School Griffins defeated the Christian Learning Eagles) 6-0 in a junior varsity boys soccer game played at International Thursday.
Sergio Rosado, Santiago Rosado, and Harold Garay each scored twice for the winners.
The weather was no inconvenience, and the game began with the Griffins attacking with everything they had. However, Christian Learning School goalkeeper Andres Larsen stopped shot after shot, until Sergio Rosado hit one that left Larsen with no chance. Garay scored the second goal with a tremendous 35-meter free kick.
Christian Learning tried and tried, and at one point got through a confused Griffin defense, but the shot went just outside the goalpost. International kept play in their opponents’ end, and the third goal came off the foot of Santiago Rosado.
The match got very interesting after that goal as both teams went all out. The Eagles tried hard to score, even after Garay got his second goal of the match, making the score 4-0.
The fifth goal was scored by Santiago Rosado, and the sixth by Sergio Rosado, who just missed a hat trick later when his shot hit the crossbar. The Eagles nearly scored on the last play of the game, but an amazing stop by Griffins’ goalkeeper Santiago Maldonado prevented it.
The captains were Sebastian Justiniano for International and Ricardo Enns for Christian Learning.

The Cambridge Lady Knights varsity girls volleyball team dropped the opening game, but then fought back to win the next two and defeat the Co-operative Jaguars before a small crowd in the Co-operative School gym.
The Jaguars won the opening with apparent ease, 25-19. However, Cambridge’s defense improved sharply in the second and third contests, which the Knights took by scores of 25 to 15 and 15 to 6.
Seniors Lourdes Justiniano and Andrea Saba, both veterans of the team that took last year’s league championship, repeatedly made key saves, while Nancy Jordan rolled up the Cambridge point total with strong serves.

International cruises by Christian Learning
The International School girls varsity volleyball team defeated Christian Learning Thursday in a match that was more tightly contested than the scores would indicate. Many of the points were decided only after long rallies before a large crowd of spectators.
The International Griffins took the first game 25 to 12. They were challenged more strongly by the Christian Learning girls in the second game, but prevailed 25 to 20. The game was played at International.

Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball
Jaguars survive Cambridge’s attempted comeback
The Co-operative School’s junior varsity girls volleyball team won the opening game against Cambridge 25-14, and then earned a hard-fought victory in the second game, 26-24, in a game played at Co-operative Thursday.

International Griffins win against Christian Learning
The International School girls junior varsity volleyball team defeated Christian Learning two games to none on their home court. The Griffins won the opener 25-10, and took the second game 25 to 13.
